# International

> Multi-language, multi-currency and multi-market support with automatic header selectors and fully translated strings.

# International

Selling internationally is mostly two things: translating your words, and letting
customers pay in their own currency. VARAHI handles the second automatically and the
first completely.

Header with language and country selectors

***

## The selectors appear automatically

You do not enable the language or currency selector. VARAHI renders them when your
store has more than one option, and hides them when it does not.

| Selector | Appears when | Behaviour |
| - | - | - |
| **Language** | 2+ published languages | Swaps the storefront language |
| **Country / currency** | 2+ markets | Sets country and currency |

Both are native Shopify forms that post to Shopify's localization endpoint. There is
no JavaScript of your own and no API call.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The country selector also sets a `data-currency` attribute on the `<body>` element.
> Your custom CSS can hook into it if you need to adjust a price display for a
> specific currency.

***

## Every string is translatable

VARAHI ships translation files in `locales/`. Every user-facing string — button labels, section headings, accessibility announcements, error messages, the cart live region — comes from a translation key.

| Locale file | Contains |
| - | - |
| `locales/en.default.json` | The source strings |
| `locales/fr.json` | French |
| `locales/de.json` | German |
| — | One file per language you publish |

> [!WARNING]
>
> When you publish a new language, Shopify copies the default locale into it. Any key
> you later add to the theme will be missing from the translated files and will fall
> back to English. Re-copy the locale from **Settings → Languages** after a theme
> update to pick up new keys.

## Currency formatting

Prices are formatted by Shopify using your store's currency settings, so:

* Symbol and position follow your store's locale
* Prices update when the country selector changes
* Tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive display follows your store settings

> [!NOTE]
>
> The bulk-pack total in the Hero Product is calculated client-side from the variant
> price and multiplied by the pack quantity. Because the base price is already
> currency-correct, the total is correct too — but it is formatted with the browser's
> locale rules, not Shopify's. If you sell in a currency with unusual formatting, check
> the bulk total visually.

## RTL support

The theme's layout is built with logical CSS properties and flexbox, so right-to-left
languages mirror correctly without a separate stylesheet.

| Element | RTL behaviour |
| - | - |
| Header | Logo stays on the reading-start side |
| Cart drawer | Slides in from the correct edge |
| Mobile drawer | Slides in from the correct edge |
| Grids | Flow in reading order |
| Icons with direction | Directional icons should use the `rtl:` CSS logical variant |

***

## Setting up a new language

**1. Add the language in Shopify**

**Settings → Languages → Add language**. Choose the language and set the store
domain it will be served on.

**2. Publish the theme**

The theme's locale files are copied into the new language the next time the theme
is published.

**3. Re-copy the locale**

In **Settings → Languages**, open the new language and use **Copy from default
theme** so every key is present.

**4. Translate**

Translate in the theme editor, or in the JSON files directly if you are deploying
with the CLI.

**5. Verify**

The language selector appears in the header as soon as the second language is
published. Click through and check the cart, the drawer, and the accessibility
announcements.
