# Product discovery

> Instant search, faceted filtering, a four-level mega menu, quick add, and the browser-local wishlist.

# Product discovery

A shopper who cannot find a product will not buy it. VARAHI gives you four discovery
surfaces, and they all share one search index: Shopify's own.

Search modal with live results

***

## Instant search

A modal that opens on click, focuses the input, and returns results as the shopper
types.

| Behaviour | Detail |
| - | - |
| **Live results** | Queries as you type, debounced so it is not hammering the server |
| **Product images** | Thumbnails beside each result |
| **Empty state** | A considered "no results" message with a suggestion to browse |
| **Keyboard control** | Arrow keys to move, Enter to open, Escape to close |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Search queries go to Shopify's `search/suggest.json` endpoint, which respects your
> store's published products, collections and **Search & Discovery** filters. If you
> install a third-party search app, the app's own modal usually replaces this one.

## Faceted filtering

The collection sidebar and mobile filter drawer are driven by your store's filter
configuration. See [Collection page](https://varaahi.vritservicespro.com/sections/main-collection.md#filtering) for the
full filter breakdown.

The mobile drawer shows a **live count** of matching products on the "Show results"
button, so a shopper always knows how much the filter is narrowing things down before
they commit.

## The mega menu

Up to **four levels** of nesting, opened on hover in the header.

| Level | Treatment |
| - | - |
| 1 | Inline in the header |
| 2 | First column in the dropdown |
| 3 | Indented panel, shifted right |
| 4 | Deeper indent, shifted further |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Four levels is a maximum, not a target. Most mega menus die at two. If you find
> yourself using level three or four, the information architecture is usually the
> problem, not the menu.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The dropdown opens on hover for desktop **and** on click. Click support means
> touch devices and keyboard users are not locked out, and it means the menu does
> not open accidentally when the pointer passes over it.

## Quick add

The collection grid's product cards carry a quick-add button that adds the product's
default variant to the cart without leaving the page.

| Rule | Detail |
| - | - |
| **Available** | Single-variant products, and multi-variant products with no required options |
| **Unavailable** | Products with options the shopper must choose — never add a size they did not pick |
| **Feedback** | The button confirms inline, and the header cart count animates |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Quick add respects inventory. If the variant is out of stock, the button is
> disabled rather than failing silently at the cart.

## The wishlist

A browser-local wishlist.

| Property | Detail |
| - | - |
| **Storage** | `localStorage`, in the shopper's own browser |
| **Persistence** | Across visits on the same device and browser |
| **Not synced** | Not across devices, not between browsers, not tied to an account |
| **Placement** | Header icon, plus an optional button on the product page |
| **Empty state** | A considered message, not a blank modal |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Be clear with your customers about what the wishlist does. If you send a "you
> saved 3 items" email, the shopper expects it to follow them to another device. It
> does not. If you want that, install a wishlist app.

## Recommendations

| Surface | Source |
| - | - |
| **Related products** section | Search & Discovery rules, or manual selection |
| **Upsells in the drawer** | Manual, per block |
| **Search results** | Shopify's search ranking |

> [!NOTE]
>
> "Related products" driven by **Search & Discovery** rules is far more effective
> than Shopify's default "same collection" behaviour. Tag your products properly and
> set up a rule for "also bought" and "complements" — that is where the cross-sell
> revenue actually comes from.

## The discovery checklist

**Search returns your hero product first**

If your flagship product does not appear at the top of its own name search, its
title needs work.

**Filters are configured**

An empty filter sidebar is worse than no sidebar.

**The mega menu is two levels deep**

Every extra level costs you conversions.

**Related products are rule-driven**

Same-collection related products are usually wrong.
